Measurements, energy expenditure of physical activities, dietary information etc. This is the first Guideline on prevention of overweight and obesity in China up to date. currently many people including health workers fail to recognize obesity as an ailment in China, or as a risk factor of many other chronic diseases. Therefore, this guideline serves health workers as a reference in addition to provide the general public with sound scientific knowledge on obesity and weight loss activities. The Guideline provides a comprehensive guide to control overweight and obesity, including a three-pronged intervention approach targeting different population groups: preventive intervention for general population, a fine-tuned intervention for high risk population, and a tailor-made intervention for people suffering obesity and other diseases. It described rules of thumb for diet management, physical activities and exercise of high risk population. The Guideline also emphasized the role of policy support and government commitment to obesity intervention, for instance, the residence's demand of exercise facilities should be taken into account in neighborhood planning. It is hoped that this guidebook will greatly facilitate the efforts on preventing obesity, controlling chronic diseases, and improving the life quality and health status of Chinese population. Readers of the Guideline could be community health workers, clinical doctors, academia, and interested public. Tested on a one-trial step-through inhibitory avoidance task with a procedure that has been adopted by many studies 36 ; . Briefly, the apparatus was a troughshape alley divided by a sliding door into a well-lit safe compartment and a dark shock compartment. The rat was placed into the lit side facing away from the door. As the rat turned around, the door was opened. After the rat stepped into the dark compartment, it received an inescapable footshock via a constant current shocker controlled by a timer Lafayette Instruments, Model 80240 and Model 58010, Indiana, USA ; . The shock intensity was calculated as the root mean square of the sinusoidal alternating currents. Various experiments used different levels of shock intensity, which were chosen as optimal for detecting the effect of a given treatment based on previous findings and would be specified in each experiment. After administration of the shock, the rat was removed from the alley and returned to its home cage. In a retention test given 24 hrs later, the rat was reintroduced into the alley and the latency of stepping into the shock compartment with all four feet was taken as the retention score. If a rat did not step through in 10 min, the test trial was terminated and a ceiling score of 600 s was assigned. Locomotor Activity. To assess the possible effect of some drugs on locomotion, a subset of rats were tested for locomotor activity after the inhibitory avoidance test. The rat was placed into an arena 303050 cm ; after intra-BNST infusion of drugs and its activity was videotaped for 15 min. These tape-recorded data were then analyzed by the Ethovision system Noldus Information Technology, Netherland ; for detection of horizontal movement. Cumulative distance traveled was calculated for each of the five 3-minute blocks. Shock Sensitivity. In order to evaluate influences of the drugs on sensitivity to electric shocks, a subset of rats already tested in the inhibitory avoidance task were subjected to a shock startle test, in which the effects of altered sensory receptivity and motor reactivity could be dissociated 9 ; . Briefly, rats after being infused with saline or various drugs were put into a startle apparatus San Diego Instrument, San Diego, U.S.A. ; with a continuous 55 dB background noise. After an acclimation period of 5 min, 45 startle trials were presented with an inter-trial interval of 30 s. Two types of stimuli were used to elicit startle: A type of stimuli dispensed from a programmable shocker TI 30, Coulburn Instrument, San Diego, U. S.A. ; contained 9 different intensities of electric shocks 0.1 s duration ; ranging from 0 to 1.6 mA at incremental steps of 0.2 mA. The other type was white noise bursts at intensities of 95, 105 and 115 dB 40 ms duration ; . Each session contained three blocks of trials, and each block was composed of 6 acoustic and micronase. Shigeko Tsuda * , Akira Tsuda * and Yoshiyuki Tanaka * * Department of Nursing, * Department of Psychology, Kurume University Kurume, Fukuoka 830-0003, Japan CONTEXT Although it has been made little of postpartum mood disturbance in Japanese women in childbirth among clinical practitioners, the perinatal period is recently recognized as high risk timing for women in terms of mental health from the point of view of Health Psychology. OBJECTIVES This study is conducted to assess the predictive utility of subjective well-being to maternal blues by monitoring the perceived health mood during the perinatal period. HYPOTHESES It is hypothesized that subjective well-being would be negatively associated with maternal blues for the postnatal period. However, no specific predictions are made as to which of the obstetrical factors would be interacted with postnatal mood. METHOD Seventy-five Japanese women were volunteers recruited from the maternity division of Kurume University Hospital. Their average age was 30 SD 4.6, 19 to 41 years old ; . Two of third of the subjects had previous children. The WHO Subjective Well-being Inventory and Stein's maternity blues scale were used as the measures of mood during pregnancy and postpartum at the 36 weeks of pregnancy weeks, 5 days and 1 month following childbirth. RESULTS Subjective well-being was associated with less maternity blues symptoms during the perinatal period. In multivariate regression models, maternity blues were associated with higher levels of negative feelings and childbirth history. The obstetrical factors of complications were significantly related to maternity blues, but other factors were not. CONCLUSION This study suggests that subjective well-being appears to be a reliable contributing factor to the differential susceptibility to maternity blues during the perinatal period.

In order to discover and understand the mechanisms of HMGR-regulated degradation, we have been studying the process in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae 6, 11, 12 ; . Our earlier work has shown that the yeast HMGR isozyme Hmg2p is degraded in a regulated manner with many similarities to the analogous process in mammals. Through the use of genetic selections and screens, we have been able to identify genes required for the degradation of Hmg2p, called HRD genes 11 ; , and genes required for normal regulation of Hmg2p degradation.2 Concurrently with these screens, we have been studying the nature of the mevalonate-derived signals that control Hmg2p stability. Hmg2p degradation is regulated by an unknown signal from the mevalonate pathway Fig. 1a ; . Inhibiting early pathway enzymes, such as HMGR itself or HMG-CoA synthase, decreases the rate of Hmg2p degradation 6 ; . These early pathway blocks decrease the availability of a downstream signal for degradation. Conversely, inhibiting the enzyme squalene synthase, which is downstream of HMGR, stimulates degradation and ubiquitination of Hmg2p 12 ; . Furthermore, the degradation-enhancing effect of squalene synthase inhibition is abolished by simultaneous inhibition of HMG-CoA synthase or HMGR. These pharmacological studies imply that the signal for Hmg2p degradation is a pathway molecule between mevalonate and squalene Fig. 1a ; . The most reasonable candidate for this signal is farnesyl diphosphate FPP ; or an off-pathway FPP derivative. The idea that FPP, or a derivative, is a positive signal for Hmg2p degradation is particularly interesting since there is accumulating evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies that farnesol, an FPP-derivative, is a signal for regulation of mammalian HMGR stability 1317 ; . We have now tested the hypothesis that FPP provides a molecular signal for control of Hmg2p stability using unique genetic opportunities available in yeast. In conjunction with pharmacological and biochemical approaches, we have constructed yeast strains that allowed either overexpression or down-regulation of specific mevalonate pathway genes Fig. 1b ; . Our results indicated that FPP was indeed a source of a signal for Hmg2p degradation in yeast, demonstrating that there is striking conservation for this mode of HMGR regulation among eukaryotes and monoket. 3 s ; , and the mass of particulate matter-collected is determined by weighing the confined chamber before and after the delivery of the particulate matter.
The bacteria is ingested with food. Food with a high salt or sugar content favours the growth of S. aureus Tuo et al., 1995 ; . Many outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning result from hand contacts Bryant et al., 1998 ; . Attempts to control these diseases by chemotherapy through the use of antimicrobial agents particularly antibiotics have resulted in increased prevalence of resistance to these agents Levy, 1998 ; . Several investigations have been conducted to study the antimicrobial resistance pattern of S. aureus and it has been shown that the organism is resistant to -lactam antibiotics, amino glycoside and macrolides Atkinson and Lorian, 1984; Maple et al., 1989 ; . S. aureus strains carry a wide variety of multi-drug resistant genes on plasmids, which can be exchanged and spread among different species of Staphylococci Neihart et al., 1988 ; . The multi-resistance determinants can be transferred to new bacterial hosts. The situation is made more difficult in developing countries such as Nigeria where antimicrobial drugs are readily available to consumers across the counter with or without prescription from a medical practitioner.Such a practice has led to misuse of antimicrobial drugs with the associated high prevalence of drug resistance among the Staphylococci Nnochiri, 1973; Adekeye, 1979; Paul et al., 1982 ; . Hospital strains of S. aureus are usually resistant to a variety of different antibiotics. Few strains are resistant to all clinically useful antibiotics except vancomycin. Some workers have reported however the presence of vancomycin resistant strains Aubry-Damon et al., 1998; Shakibaie et al., 2002 ; . This work was undertaken to determine the prevalence of antibiotic resistant S. aureus in hospital and non-hospital populations in Abia State of Nigeria and imdur and gatifloxacin, for instance, antibiotics.

Cholesterol appears to play a role in -amyloid production in Alzheimer disease AD ; , and blockade of cholesterol production by statins has been theorized to protect against AD.18 Two observational studies have reported that patients taking statins have lower rates of AD, 1, 2 and studies have shown that those with AD may have higher cholesterol levels. Older elderly patients with AD have higher cholesterol levels than older elderly patients with other dementias19 and than those without dementia.20 The -4 genotype of apolipoprotein E, which is linked to AD and also to vascular dementia, is associated with elevated lipids levels.21 Statins protect against nonfatal though not fatal ; stroke, 1, 2 perhaps in part through reductions in blood pressure see sixth paragraph of "Counters to Favorable Statin Effects, and Adverse Statin Effects" ; , antithrombotic effects, 22, 23 and augmentation of endothelial nitric oxide with enhanced cerebral perfusion, 24-26 and stroke or cerebrovascular ischemia is a major contributor to cognitive loss in the elderly. The more severe manifestations of ischemic cognitive loss are widely recognized and are termed multi-infarct dementia ; . Through these mechanisms, statins could protect cognitive function with aging. However, the apparent link between statin use and lower rates of AD in observational studies need not imply that statins protect; first, those treated with statins have higher cholesterol levels before, and often despite, treatment.10 Statin users were also noted to have higher rates of transient ischemic attacks in one of those studies, 27 yet one could not assert that statins cause transient ischemic attacks, and indeed randomized trial evidence shows that statins protect against them, 2, 28 a reminder that observational findings may be in opposition to results from randomized trials. In addition, statins are costly drugs more often received by persons of higher education or socioeconomic status, which in turn is associated with reduced incidence of AD. This may be because it takes less time for the effect of AD, if present, to be perceived.29 Head injury and lower intellect from any cause are also linked to increased risk of diagnosis of AD during life.29, 30 ; On the other hand, there is also evidence that AD is associated with higher cholesterol levels. The finding that older elderly patients with AD have higher cholesterol levels than older elderly patients with other dementias19 could partially reflect a contribution by low cholesterol level to non-AD mechanisms for cognitive decline. In addition, although AD is associated with higher cholesterol level than that in a normal comparison group, high cholesterol level could be a noncausal31 concomitant of genotypes that predispose to AD, such as that associated with the -4 isoform of apolipoprotein E.21 Counters to Favorable Statin Effects, and Adverse Statin Effects Deleterious effects on cognition have also been proposed, and some of the evidence for benefit can be countered. Cholesterol serves vital functions in the brain. The CNS accounts for only 2% of the body mass, but nearly a fourth of nonesterified cholesterol.32 Glial-derived cholesterol has recently been shown to be vital for forma ARCHINTERNMED!
